UK (University of Bristol) Bristol jumps in global subject rankings by Times Higher Education

Several subjects taught at the University of Bristol have jumped higher in the 2023 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject.

Bristol climbed in six of the 11 broad subject categories ranked by THE.

It means that seven of Bristol’s subjects are now in the top 100 in the world and ten are in the top 150, according to THE.

The University’s best performance came in the Clinical Health category, where it was ranked 54th in the world. Both Education and Physical Sciences were ranked 57th and both Law and Psychology were ranked 64th.

It comes two weeks after the release of THE’s World University Rankings 2023, which saw the University of Bristol rise 16 places to 76th in the world.

A University of Bristol spokesperson said: “It is fantastic to see so many of Bristol’s courses placed among the best in the world.

“Having both our research and teaching recognised in this way is testament to the dedicated and hardworking staff across the University who have driven this success.”

The 11 subject categories that THE ranked were: Arts and Humanities; Business and Economics; Clinical and Health; Computer Science; Education; Engineering; Law: Life Sciences; Physical Sciences; Psychology; and Social Sciences.

THE’s subject rankings looked at the same 13 criteria used in its recent world rankings. It groups these into five “pillars”:

  • Teaching
  • Research quality and quantity
  • Citations (how far research reaches)
  • International outlook (how many international staff & students there are and how many papers are co-authored internationally.
  • Industry income (university innovations and consultancy services bought by outside organisations)
